YCGL - Day 7 - Saturday, April 6, 2024 - The Eclipse Edition
OK, Fellow Eclipse Geeks. The time is drawing nigh. Yea, verily, it's really close.
The best info map I've seen is this one.
Timing:
From where I'm at in Concan, TX
Penumbra Umbra Duration Coverage Penumbra
Thom, Concan , CDT 12:12 1:30:15 4:26 Total 2:53
Erik, Boston, EDT 2:16 3:29 Max 92% 4:39
Laramie, MDT 11:31 12:41 Max 60% 1:53
Liz, Portland PDT 10:33 11:25 Max 22% 12:19
The Penumbra is when the shadow starts to eat away into the sun. The Umbra is when the moon is either covering the sun (my location) or when the maximum coverage is taking place. The last time is when there is no more coverage.
The timings are from NASA, at
however, the timings are confusing. When you type in a location, the map hops to that location, but the timings shown are for Central Daylight Time. You actually have to click on the map at your location to get the corrected times in the box. Just beware. And check your local sources as well.
Now, what I can't tell you is the cloud coverage at your location. Frankly, it isn't looking too good for me. I've had clouds for the past two days and they have been heavy. And tomorrow looks the same. The best you can do is use local predictions for weather (south Texas is one of the safest places in the country), make yourself available there, and pray. Or get on an airplane above the clouds. NASA is doing that, as I suppose a ton of other pilots are as well. Frankly, it might be a rat's nest above the clouds with all the people trying to be in one spot at the same time. I'll stick to my spot and wish the others well.
